Generally speaking, most manufacturers use bits of resolution to indicate the display capability of a DMM. For example, Keysight DMMs have resolutions as low as 3½ digits and as high as 8½ digits. Take a 5 ½ digit digital multimeter as an example, it has five integer digits, displays values from 0 to 9, and a fractional digit.

This fractional digit is the most significant digit the multimeter can display. It is the ratio of the maximum value that the bit can reach to the number of possible states. For example, ½ digit means that the maximum value is "1" and there are two possible states (0 or 1). The ¾ bit indicates that the maximum value is "3" and there are four possible states (0, 1, 2 or 3). The higher the number of bits of resolution, the more accurate the measurement results will be.
